Why use cast-in-place footings when you can use precast custom ones!
wide angle of a custom footing
Yes, you read that right! Cast-in-place footings are becoming a thing of the past. More and more projects are going with precast custom footings because of cost, efficiency, labour, and ground conditions.
Our Custom Footings Journey
Traditionally, our Tri-Span and CON/SPAN units were placed on piles or cast-in-place footings. Piles are expensive to install, and cast-in-place footings can lead to higher field costs and human error. We found there was a need for a product to combat poor soil conditions, intensive labour, and efficiency in the field. Our in-house engineers took the task at hand, and custom footings were created to solve that need.

The Story of Our 19-Metre Footings
Recently, we designed a 16-metre Tri-Span project. The problem? Poor soil conditions and piles drove up the project costs. Our team of in-house experts hand-crafted the solution: 19-metre custom footings that alleviated the need for piles and cast-in-place footings, AND could handle many ground conditions. They look pretty cool too!
Not All Footings Are Created Equal
Custom footings improve on productivity during installations, increase accuracy in project development, and are created in controlled environments, ensuring quality and performance is met. We can custom design footings in various shapes and dimensions, accounting for the many ground conditions we face in Ontario.
What’s the difference between Wet Cast vs Dry Cast?
Did you know we manufacture both wet cast and dry cast precast products? We sure do! However, do you know the difference between Wet Cast vs Dry Cast? We get asked that question A LOT! Let’s discuss.
Difference #1 – Curing Process
One difference between them is how they are cured. Additionally, a Wet Cast product is cured in its form (or mould), whereas a Dry Cast product is stripped from its jacket and then cured. Our HDPE-Lined Pipe(shown here for example) is a Wet Cast product.
Difference #2 – Strength
What are the strength differences? The answer is simple: there are no strength differences. Concast manufactures both to meet the same industry standards for precast products. Our Tri-Span products (shown here) are Wet Cast made and meet all requirements for a wide range of robust applications.
Difference #3 – Quality
Is there a quality difference? Absolutely not! The main difference between them is how they are manufactured. Both have the same quality you’ve come to expect from Concast products that you can depend on. Our reinforced concrete pipes (shown here) are manufactured both ways, depending on the size.
Wet Cast vs Dry Cast
Concast offers both Wet Cast and Dry Cast products. Although they may be made different in their manufacturing processes, both products are extremely durable and have the same quality levels.

Are you going to the Source to Stream Conference? We’re very excited to be exhibiting at the conference together with Stormcon, and we hope you’ll stop by to learn about our stormwater management solutions, including:
Our geocelluar polypropylene solution, designed for extended detention and retention of stormwater. This modular system has high flexibility, rapid installation, and a high level of user-friendliness. It has a 96% void ratio and may be stacked 5 blocks high (3.30m) which allows for smaller footprints and maximization of space on developments.
Our arch chambers have ETV verification for quality control, making them one of the few products of their kind with this assurance. Available in a range of sizes, they can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your project. Applications include under parking lots and roads, under green spaces, and areas with lots of land.
StormCrete’s precast concrete modular design is adaptable and very easy to install and can be engineered as needed to meet your design specifications. Its rigid design makes it ideal for deep applications and heavy-duty loading. Applications include MTO, deep applications with no cover depth limitations, and shallow applications with heavy live loads.
The Vault is a next-generation stormwater solution that combines the benefits of GreenStorm and StormCrete into one patent-pending system. It maximizes land use, supports infiltration or full containment, and can even be designed with permanent pools to mimic traditional ponds. This large system is ideal for municipal applications.
Meet our Engineers at the Conference
We hope you’ll join us in booth #600. You’ll have the opportunity to speak with two of our engineers about these exciting products and learn the benefits of each solution. Together, we can design a system that meets your specifications.
No two jobs are the same in this industry. Flexibility is key to our process. Which is why we want you to know we can custom manufacture whatever you need for your next infrastructure project. How do we accomplish this? Well, two of our options are building custom forms and waterjet cutting.
Custom Forms
Depending on your needs, we can build forms out of a variety of materials, bending and molding them into the shape(s) and angle(s) required. We then insert the forms, add our premium blend of concrete, and voilà you have a custom product. Ok, it’s not that simple, but you get the idea.
Why use custom forms?
They allow for precision in creating the product to your specifications. When it comes to installation, they can make the process much smoother and efficient, saving you time and money in the field.
Waterjet Cutting
Our waterjet machine, unique to Concast, is capable of cutting out any shape like a knife through butter. We will work with you on the exact measurements, create drawings through our engineering department, load them into the machine, and let it do its magic.
Why use the waterjet machine?
Similar to using custom forms, it allows for precision both in the product manufacturing and in field installations. And the cost-savings are a nice bonus.
Need a circle or square cut? We can do that. How about elliptical shapes? No problem. We can cut as many shapes and configurations as needed. The possibilities are endless!
Want to learn more?
If this sounds interesting, and you want to learn more, get in touch with us below. You can also request a plant tour to see the waterjet in action.
